(2 p.m. EST) — Carnival Cruise Line has raised the price of its entry-level internet package from $5 to $8 per day.

The package, which gives cruisers access to the most popular social media websites and apps, was one of the least expensive internet packages in the industry at $5 per day (or $4 per day, if pre-purchased). While it’s still less expensive than most other lines, the increase does amount to more than $20 more a person for a one-week cruise — or $12.60 more per person, if pre-purchased for $6.80 a day.

According to Carnival, the price increase “is to align pricing with new bandwidth requirements as apps are increasingly requiring more bandwidth.

“Our Social Cruise package continues to be the most competitively priced in the industry, offering a great value to our guests who want to stay in touch with those onshore using popular social apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others.”

Prices for Carnival’s other internet packages (the value and premium plans) remain unchanged.
