Virgin Voyages Confirms Fourth Ship

(9:45 a.m. GMT) — Virgin Voyages and shipbuilders Fincantieri have signed a 700 million euros (roughly $7.9 million) contract for a fourth cruise ship, which will launch at the end of 2023.

The new vessel will be a sister to the three 2,770-passenger vessels currently under construction at the Italian shipyard.

The first ship — Scarlet Lady — will launch in 2020, followed by a ship a year until 2023.

“We’re delighted to confirm that we’ve entered into a contract with Fincantieri to build the fourth ship in our fleet, and we will be sharing additional details soon,” a spokesperson for Virgin Voyages told Cruise Critic.

The line revealed the name of the first ship at a float out ceremony at Fincantieri in July, with steel cut for the second.

A statement from the shipyard said: “The Virgin Voyages fleet will stand out for original design and craftsmanship. Highlights include highly innovative design solutions, specifically to address energy recovery and the reduction of the overall environmental impact.”

Virgin Voyages aims to disrupt the traditional cruise market, referring to passengers as “sailors” — and refusing to use the word “cruise”, opting for “voyages” instead. All ships will be adults-only.

The line has gradually revealed onboard features, the latest of which is a tattoo parlor at sea, “Squid Ink”.

Scarlet Lady will sail its inaugural season of Caribbean itineraries from Miami in 2020.
